The History of Azalea Flowers
Azaleas have a rich history dating back to ancient times. It’s believed that the flower originated in Asia and was first introduced to Europe in the 16th century. It was highly valued in Japanese culture and was often used in traditional tea ceremonies.
In the early 1900s, Japanese immigrants began bringing azaleas to the Hawaiian Islands, and in the 1920s they were first planted in the famous Kapiolani Park in Honolulu, where they quickly became a popular attraction. Over the years, azaleas continued to be planted in public parks and private gardens throughout Hawai‘i, becoming a cherished part of the Islands' floral landscape. It was even designated as the official flower of the City and County of Honolulu, and it remains a beloved symbol of renewal and celebration in the city to this day.
Outside of Hawai‘i, azalea flowers were also becoming popular in the southeastern region of the United States, where warm climates allowed them to thrive. In 1934, it was selected as the official flower of the Season Opener.
Given its vibrant history, it's no surprise that we chose the Azalea as our main inspiration for this collection.
