In the third chapter of On Guard, our film series chronicling the lives of Hawai‘i’s elite lifeguards, we travel to O‘ahu to spend time with Kapua Chang — Ocean Safety’s first female jet ski rescue operator. Rooted in a deep responsibility to her community and the waters she grew up around, Kapua’s path into Ocean Safety reflects a strong sense of purpose and service.
Determined to earn her place on the team, she committed to reshaping her health and conditioning to meet the demands of the role. Today, she operates on the front lines of ocean rescue, running the mindset “All Gas, No Brakes” — a reflection of both the pace of the job and her readiness when lives are on the line.
